Radiators Not Heating Up? Fix Cold Spots & Airlocks
Cold radiators, airlocks or uneven heating? Here is how to get your system warming up safely and efficiently again.
If your radiators are not heating up properly, your home quickly feels uncomfortable and you may worry something major has gone wrong. The good news is that many common issues have simple checks you can do yourself, as long as you stay safe and know when to stop and call a professional.
First checks before you reach for the tools
Before bleeding radiators or adjusting anything, start with a few basic checks. These can save you time and may fix the problem without any tools at all.
Room thermostat and programmer: Make sure the heating is actually calling for heat, the time settings are correct and the thermostat is turned up.
Boiler pressure: On most sealed systems the gauge should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when cold. If it is close to zero or in a red zone, do not ignore it.
Radiator valves: Check both valves on each radiator are fully open by turning them anti-clockwise.
Other radiators: Walk around and see which radiators are hot, lukewarm or completely cold. This pattern is an important clue.
If the boiler is off or showing an error code, do not attempt to reset things repeatedly. Turn the system off and contact a Gas Safe registered engineer immediately.
Common causes of radiators not heating properly
Once the basics are checked, the symptoms usually point towards a few common issues. Understanding these helps you decide what you can safely try yourself.
Cold at the top: trapped air
If a radiator is hot at the bottom but cold at the top, air has likely collected in the system. Water cannot reach the very top, so that part stays cold or lukewarm.
Bleeding the radiator normally solves this. If you have to bleed radiators very often, there may be an underlying fault, such as a small leak or a problem allowing air into the system, which needs a professional to investigate.
Cold at the bottom: sludge or blockages
If the top of the radiator is hot but the bottom is cold, that often means sludge has built up. Sludge is a mix of rust and debris that settles in the bottom of radiators and reduces water flow.
Over time this can damage your boiler and pump as they are forced to work harder. A heating engineer can test the system water, recommend chemicals or carry out power flushing to clear the pipework and radiators.
One radiator cold: stuck valve or balancing issue
If only one radiator is cold while others are hot, focus on its valves. Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) can stick shut, especially at the end of summer when they have stayed in one position for months.
Balancing may also be needed. This is where the flow to each radiator is adjusted so the ones furthest from the boiler still get enough hot water. Balancing is delicate work and often best left to an engineer unless you are confident and patient.
Several cold radiators: pump or system layout
If several radiators stay cold while others near the boiler heat up, the pump may be failing or set too low. In some older systems, incorrect pipework or a faulty diverter valve can also mean some circuits never get properly hot.
These issues are not suitable for DIY. They involve electrics, sealed parts and hot water under pressure, so an engineer should diagnose and repair them.
How to bleed a radiator safely
Bleeding removes trapped air and often solves radiators that are cold at the top. Work methodically and keep safety in mind, as the water can be very hot.
Step 1: Turn the heating off
Switch off the heating and let the system cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This reduces the risk of scalding and gives a more accurate boiler pressure reading.
Step 2: Gather what you need
You will need a radiator key, a small towel or cloth and a container to catch any drips. Place the towel under the bleed valve at the top of the radiator.
Step 3: Open the bleed valve slowly
Insert the key into the valve and gently turn it anti-clockwise. You should hear a hissing sound as air escapes. Keep the valve only slightly open and stand back in case water spurts.
Step 4: Close when water flows steadily
As soon as water (not air) flows in a steady stream, close the valve by turning the key clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the valve.
Step 5: Check boiler pressure
After bleeding several radiators, the system pressure may drop. Check the gauge and top up within the recommended range if your boiler manual allows. If pressure keeps dropping, stop topping up and call an engineer.
How to free a stuck TRV pin
If a radiator with a TRV stays cold while its valve head is set to maximum, the small pin underneath may be stuck. Only attempt this if you feel comfortable and the radiator is cool enough to touch.
Turn the heating off and remove the TRV head by unscrewing the collar nut or using the release catch, depending on the model. You will see a small metal pin sticking out of the valve body.
Using your thumb or the blunt end of a spoon, gently press the pin in and out a few times. It should move freely by a couple of millimetres and spring back out. Do not pull the pin or use heavy tools, as that can cause a leak.
Once it moves freely, refit the TRV head, turn the heating back on and check whether the radiator begins to warm. If the pin will not move or the valve is damp, stop and call an engineer.
Situations where you should not attempt DIY
There are clear warning signs that the problem is beyond safe DIY fixes. Ignoring them can risk damage to your property or, in the case of gas issues, your safety.
Recurring pressure loss or needing to top up the boiler often
Any visible leaks from pipes, valves or the boiler casing
Boiler lockouts, strange noises or repeated fault codes
In these cases, turn the system off and contact a qualified engineer. Do not try to dismantle the boiler, pump or gas components yourself.
When to call an engineer and what we will check

Keeping your heating running smoothly
Regular maintenance helps prevent many radiator problems. Annual boiler servicing, suitable system inhibitor and occasional checks on pressure and radiator performance all extend the life of your heating system.
