Radiator Balancing: What It Is & How to Do It Safely
Even out hot and cold rooms by carefully balancing your radiators and knowing when it is time to call in a professional.
If some rooms in your home feel like a sauna while others never warm up, your radiators are probably out of balance. With a bit of patience, you can often improve comfort and cut wasted energy by carefully balancing your system.
What radiator balancing actually means
Radiator balancing is the process of adjusting the lockshield valves on your radiators so hot water from the boiler is shared fairly across the whole house. Rather than the closest radiators taking most of the heat, you aim for each room to warm up at a similar speed.
On a typical system, the boiler pumps hot water around a loop of pipework. Without balancing, water naturally flows more easily to the nearest radiators, which then get very hot, while those further away stay lukewarm. Balancing adds a little resistance to the radiators that get hot too quickly so more flow is pushed towards the cooler ones.
Common signs your radiators need balancing
Before you start adjusting anything, it helps to confirm that balancing is actually the issue. Look for patterns in how the house heats up, especially at the start of a heating cycle.

If several radiators stay completely cold or only heat at the bottom, that can indicate sludge or trapped air rather than simple balancing. In that case, you may need bleeding, cleaning or professional help before balancing will have any effect.
Getting to know your radiator valves
Most modern homes have two valves on each radiator. One is the control you use every day, the other is the lockshield which is usually adjusted only during installation or balancing.
The visible, numbered valve is typically a thermostatic radiator valve, or TRV. This has numbers or symbols around the top and can usually be turned by hand to control how hot that radiator gets.
The lockshield valve is often on the opposite end. It may have a plain plastic cap or even a metal stem with no obvious handle. You normally need a small adjustable spanner or a dedicated key to turn it. This valve controls how much water flows through the radiator and is what you will be adjusting to balance the system.
Safe step-by-step radiator balancing at home
Balancing is not complicated, but it does take time and a careful approach. Allow at least a couple of hours, and more for larger houses. It helps to have a digital thermometer or clip-on radiator thermometer to measure temperatures accurately.
1. Prepare your heating system
Turn the heating off and let everything cool to room temperature. Make sure all TRVs and manual radiator valves are fully open so every radiator can receive flow. Check that the boiler pressure is in the green zone and that there are no obvious leaks before starting.
Place old towels or sheets under the valves you will adjust to protect floors from drips. Keep a small container or cloth handy in case a valve seeps slightly when moved.
2. Fully open the lockshields
Using your spanner or key, gently turn each lockshield valve anti-clockwise until it is fully open, then close it again by counting the turns, so you know the range. Finally, open each one completely once more to start from a known point.
Do not force any valve that feels seized. If it will not move with gentle pressure, stop. Forcing it can cause leaks or break the valve, which then needs professional repair.
3. Warm the system and take temperature readings
Turn the heating back on and set the room thermostat higher than usual so the boiler runs continuously for a while. Starting with the radiator closest to the boiler, wait until it is hot, then measure the temperature of the pipe on the flow side and the pipe on the return side.
You are aiming for a temperature drop across each radiator of roughly 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. Repeat the measurements for each radiator in order, moving further away from the boiler as you go.
4. Adjust in small steps and be patient
If a radiator shows only a very small temperature drop, it is getting too much flow and needs its lockshield slightly closed. Turn the lockshield a quarter of a turn clockwise, then leave it to settle for at least 10 to 15 minutes before rechecking.
For radiators that are much cooler than others, you may need to open their lockshields a little more, especially if they are furthest from the boiler or on higher floors. Again, adjust in small increments and allow time after each change for the temperatures to stabilise before you measure again.
Safety precautions while adjusting radiators
Working around hot water and pressurised systems always calls for caution. Never attempt balancing if you are unsure how to turn your boiler off or isolate your heating system.
Valves and pipes can get very hot, so use gloves if needed and avoid resting your hand directly on metalwork. If you have a combi boiler, learn how to re-pressurise it using the filling loop, as small leaks or air removal elsewhere in the system can sometimes reduce pressure.
If you notice any dripping or spraying from a valve while adjusting, close the valve back to where it was and turn the heating off. Do not keep tightening in the hope it will stop. Instead, contact a qualified heating engineer as a faulty valve may need replacing.
What balancing can and cannot fix
When done carefully, radiator balancing can make your home feel more evenly heated and may reduce boiler cycling, which can help with efficiency and wear. Many homeowners notice that radiators heat up more in sync and that cold rooms become more usable.
However, balancing alone cannot fix deeper system issues. If radiators are full of sludge, undersized for the room, or if the pump is failing, you will still have performance problems. Poor insulation, draughts and single glazing can also leave rooms chilly even when the radiator itself is working correctly.
